Acupuncture is a treatment that originated in China some two thousand years ago. Over time it has been modified for use in animals based on the original human acupuncture points. Acupuncture is one part of Traditional Chinese Medicine that consists of the placement of needles in certain parts of the body that correspond to different conditions ranging from lameness to pneumonia. The idea is to treat the underlying imbalance in the body rather than just the symptoms as is typical with our Western medicine. Placement of the needles will cause endorphins or “feel-good” chemicals to be circulated throughout the brain and will help increase blood and lymphatic flow to the area. The points can also be used as an indicator of where a lameness problem may have originated.
